Success!

Here we are at the finish line! It was a great day for a morning run in Buffalo...about 60 degrees and sunny. My brother, Steve, my sister and her husband, and I all had great runs. I started out at a comfortable pace to see what my leg would be like, then started to run a little faster. For almost the first six miles, I followed a couple who was running at a good pace just over a nine minute mile and who provided motivational eye-candy.

On a loop around mile 8 I saw my brother a few blocks ahead of me. I decided to try and catch up with him, but I think he got worried and started running faster. I didn't see him after that. At mile 10, supporters cheering us on told us there were only two miles left, so I really picked up the pace (not realizing there really were 3.1 miles left). I felt great for the last three miles, running under 8 minute miles when I had been running over 9 minute miles in the beginning.

On the last straightaway to the finish line, I finally saw my brother about one block ahead of me. With only four blocks to go, there was no way I could catch up and he finished thirty-three seconds ahead of me. My official race time: 1:53:28. Julie and Don finished twenty minutes later, beating their last half-marathon time by 30 minutes.

Julie and Don coming around a circle.

Having a barbecue at my brother's house after the race.

Going on a trip. This guy tagged along in my carry-on luggage. Most of us in our family went to see Star Wars on Saturday! It's even better the second time around!

stretch

An update: I guess I have not talked about the running program in a while. In late March I suffered a groin/hip injury that I've been dealing with ever since (it's more of a tennis-related injury than running). I went to a doctor and physical therapist to get me back on track, but knew I wouldn't be able to train for the full marathon in time. So, this weekend I'll be running the Buffalo half-marathon with some of my family members. I was nervous that even that was going to be a struggle, but on Saturday I had a nice (slow) 8-mile run that was relatively pain free. So that's given me a boost of confidence! I'm looking forward to finishing it, then taking time off to let things fully heal. But will I be able to pull away from my tennis career, especially now with the French Open just beginning?

Last night I went to the midnight opening of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. It was amazing! It was the best of the three most recent movies. The battles were quite kick-ass.

The Man in Black.

Watching Return of the Jedi in anticipation.

Hello. I'm a fat robin chick learning how to fly.

This is a huge maple tree in front of my house. In one of its hollows a family of starlings has taken nest. All day long the parents return with food for the chirping chicks.

I was sweeping these off my porch for weeks.

I was out this morning taking pictures of road medians for work and trying not to get run over by tractor trailers. I had never driven down this road before--what a view!

Would make a nice bookmark

An experiment. I'm not sure how blogger or picasa will handle this stitched-together VA picture from last year. The pic from May 2nd is from almost the same vantage point.

Bringing Home the Bacon

Want to see a little bit of what I do in my professional life? I just sent out this Newsletter from work. I didn't do the HTML design, but I do modify the content, edit, add photos, etc. And I wrote the GIS piece. I get very nervous when e-mailing something to a few hundred people.

Some day I hope to learn how to use Dreamweaver and write HTML the real way.

Wow. Remember when this blog used to be fun? Ok, maybe not.

Firefox Browser Update

Hello, all you users of the Firefox Browser. Be sure to download the critical update--there should be an icon to click on beneathe your minimize/maximize buttons in the upper right. The update closes a security loophole.

And for you old schoolers that are still using Internet Explorer--it's time to switch! Firefox is more secure than IE and has many options that make surfing faster, easier, and more fun! Plus, you get to fight The Man in your own little way...

Tune in, yo.

If you're like me, you listen to the radio at work all day long. What did we do before we could stream stuff from all over the world? I love listening to NPR in the morning. The rest of the day I use the 'Radio' function on iTunes to listen to some cool Americana or AltRock stuff. I like radioioAcoustic, FolkAlley, Indie Pop Rocks, and Radio Paradise.

I am a delinquent.

Yes, I've been slow to blog recently. Is it a funk? Am I not being productive? Have I laid in bed until 4 pm? It could be some or all these things.

If you're here you're looking to procrastinate, as I am. Check out this scary article on bedbugs! I know a friend who recently had a VERY BAD experience with them--since her horror story, I've checked the mattresses of most rooms I frequented. (wait, that doesn't sound right...)

(especially check the mattress if you are currently overseas...)

until next time--

Awaiting Rapture

from overheardinnewyork.com (and these are the clean ones):

Wednesday One-liners, For Chrissakes

Crazy lady: I spent two years single, and then I met Jesus. And Jesus and I have been together for four years. And Jesus never forgets to call and check in once in awhile. He says, "Hey, how you doin'?".

Overheard by: Mikey

Guy: He was into wearing slippers without socks. Like Jesus.

--Union Square station

Subway preacher: Jay Z ain't gonna save ya! Jesus'll save ya!

It's been a week since watching it, yet I'm still thinking about the characters and the beautiful way the scenes were shot. Luckily, I also have a Jesus & Mary Chain CD with "Just Like Honey" from the last scene of the movie.

During the winter, I tire of the brown mountains. Now everything is bathed in spring green. I love the way you can see the greenery creeping up the mountains, which are still a bit brown on top. This is from Rt. 643, one of my favorite drives.

Poplar trees are always amazingly straight.

A swell chunk of quartz for BigRex--too large to carry.

Wildflowers do it better.

Moss cornucopia.

Hello, fiddleheads.

Fiddlehead 2.

The dogwood trees have been out for a few weeks. They are a simple and classic flowering tree very common in VA. Numerous but understated, they often appear as nothing more than phantoms in the forest.
